Mary
Mary grew up in Miami and came to Los Angeles as a young adult, drawn by the promise of a new life. During her teenage years, she struggled with substance use, and decisions made during that time led to a criminal conviction that followed her for years. By her early twenties, she committed herself to sobriety and began rebuilding her life.
Determined to move forward, Mary returned to school at UCLA and discovered acrylic portrait painting. Even so, financial stability remained difficult, and having a criminal record made it harder to secure consistent work and housing.
In 2016, trying to stretch her limited income, Mary began living in her car. Life on the street was far more difficult than she expected, with each night bringing a constant sense of vulnerability. Eventually she connected with local nonprofits and learned about Safe Parking LA, where she was admitted and had a safe place to sleep, along with support that helped cover car repairs and reduce the stress of living alone on the street.
With additional help from Brilliant Corners, she stabilized financially and continued focusing on her work and her art. One of her favorite pieces is a portrait of Mike Tyson, which reminds her of the strength it takes to keep going through life’s hardest moments. Today, Mary is no longer living in her car and is moving forward with renewed stability and hope.
